Position Description: Seattle University’s College of Education seeks an Associate Director for Research for our Public Education In Beloved Community Initiative (PEBCI), a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant-funded project. Scholars who have completed a Ph.D. in education or a related field and have strong qualitative methodological skills are invited to apply to work on cutting edge research and development to advance the understanding of beloved community and its impact and potential to shape the mission of public schooling, the relationship capacity of teachers, school leaders, students and local communities and possibilities for greater success for all engaged in the educational endeavors. This PEBCI project is a research partnership with the Seattle University College of Education, and will be designed collaboratively with researchers, educators, and leaders across the state of Washington in 9 PEBCI partner schools. The anticipated start date of this appointment is January, 2025. Recognizing the very collaborative nature of this position, the Associate Director for Research will work closely with the PEBCI Director and a Beloved Community Film Documentarian. The PEBCI Associate Director for Research reports directly to the PEBCI Director and works collaboratively with PEBCI Faculty Co-PIs. Key Responsibilities : Project Evaluation, Research Design & Implementation of Research Activities (60%) Develop a comprehensive plan for PEBCI research, in consultation with the PI, Co-PIs, PEBCI Director, SU grant team, participant schools and their local communities based on compelling research questions related to beloved community and implications for other educational phenomenon (e.g. – teacher retention, teacher professional development, identity development, the role of art in teacher professional development, the role of race, ethnicity and social identities in building beloved community, etc.). Conduct data collection and analyses for project, using data from across partner schools and communities. Research Dissemination (20%) Collaborate on scholarly dissemination of findings related to beloved community projects partner schools (e.g., conference presentations and peer reviewed journal articles). This will also include collaborations with the Project Documentarian. Support dissemination activities to foster translation of research findings to practice (e.g., practitioner focused research pieces, website work with Executive Director, possible artistic pieces in concert with student visual artists). General Project Support (20%) Work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary and multi-site team involving faculty and educators who may represent different disciplinary traditions as well as foundation professionals, university administrators, school districts, and charter/public school teachers. Qualifications: Education: Must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field of study. PhD must be completed prior to acceptance. Students in the process of completion must provide assurance that degree will be complete prior to start. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in educational research. Demonstrated background in quantitative qualitative and participatory action research design. Comfort with working in online platforms for research and collaboration. Preferred Qualifications: Experience and scholarship in educational policy and leadership. Knowledge of the field of teacher education and diversity. Experience working with K-12 students/schools/teachers and school communities. Experience working with grant funded projects.
